How to Wash All Your Clothes and Sleepwear to Prevent Stretching and Pilling

There’s nothing better than slipping into a soft, perfectly fitting favorite garment, whether it's your best day clothes or your most luxurious pyjamas. So why is it that a few months later, that dream fabric often feels stretched out, faded, stiff, or covered in those annoying little fuzz balls we call pilling?
The frustrating truth is that most fabric damage is preventable. Your favorite items aren't high-maintenance; they just need protection from the harsh environments of the washing machine and dryer.
If you want your investment pieces to last, feel soft, and hold their shape for years, focus on these five essential shifts in your laundry routine.
1. Master the Temperature: Cold Wash, Low Heat Dry
Temperature shock is the main enemy of high-quality fiber. Hot water washing causes immediate shrinkage and fading. Similarly, running the dryer until clothes are "bone dry" cooks the elasticity out of the fabric, leading to eventual stretching and a stiff, brittle feel.
The Fix: Always use cold water to wash. When drying, choose the lowest heat setting, or better yet, pull clothes out when they are still 80% dry and let them finish air drying on a hanger or rack.
2. Minimize Friction and Pilling
Pilling happens when broken surface fibers rub against each other and tangle up. This friction is highly accelerated when your soft garments are washed alongside rough items like denim, towels, or anything with metal zippers and hooks.
The Fix: Always turn your clothes and sleepwear inside-out before washing to protect the smooth outer surface. Use a separate wash load or a mesh laundry bag reserved only for delicate, light items.
3. Use Gentle Chemistry (Skip the Softener)
Harsh chemical agents in heavy-duty detergents (like bleach, brighteners, and intense enzymes) rapidly degrade fine fabrics, causing immediate fading and fiber breakdown. Furthermore, fabric softeners coat the fibers with a waxy residue that traps oils and dirt, making the fabric heavy and stiff over time.
The Fix: Choose a mild, pH-neutral detergent formulated specifically for delicates, and always add it to the dispenser so it dissolves before hitting the clothes. Skip conventional softeners entirely; use a splash of white distilled vinegar in the rinse cycle for natural softening.
4. Wash Early and Often
Even brief wear allows clothes to absorb body oils, perspiration, and dead skin cells. If left unwashed, these contaminants chemically saturate and break down the fibers. This causes premature yellowing, stubborn odors, and overall fabric weakening.
The Fix: Wash garments before contaminants set in. You don't need heavy scrubbing—the goal is simply to remove body oils and prevent chemical damage.
5. The Foundation: Start with Quality Fabric
Ultimately, high-maintenance care is often just a symptom of low-quality fabrics. Garments made from short-fiber cotton or cheap synthetics are structurally weak and are inherently designed to stretch out, pill, and fail quickly, regardless of how gently you wash them.
This is why we focus on quality investment pieces, like our collection made from 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell. We use TENCEL™ in everything from our sleepwear to our everyday essentials because it's engineered for durability.
TENCEL™ Lyocell is made from strong, wood-derived filaments. This superior structure makes the resulting fabric exceptionally smooth, which is why it naturally resists pilling and maintains its shape beautifully. It's not demanding; it's simply built better, allowing it to hold its luxurious softness and durability for hundreds of washes.
By choosing a fabric engineered for durability and applying the simple care tips above, you’ll find you have the only essential items you need for many years to come. Stop replacing—start investing.
